Nintendo Breaks Silence On Switch 2 Rumors

Articles saying Switch 2 leaks and rumors are appearing like a torrent are appearing like a torrent, as CES 2025 produced a new round of speculation, hope, confusion and possible visions of the unrevealed device. All the while, Nintendo has sat silently, presumably watching our frenetic rushing about with arch amusement, perhaps taking some sort of pleasure in not actually announcing the console. But last night, the Japanese company finally spoke up, only to tell us all to sit back down.

“The gaming hardware that Genki is claiming to be Nintendo hardware at CES is unofficial and was not provided to the company by Nintendo.”

That’s what we’ve got, given in response to a request for comment by the Japanese CNET, translated by machines and the people at Automaton. Similar was said to Japanese site The Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo again saying what was being seen was “not official.”

This is specifically in response to yesterday’s reports on the 3D printed models third-party peripheral manufacturer Genki was flashing around at CES this week, which introduced us to a mysterious new “C” button, although no one knew what it was for.

Genki, meanwhile, is now somewhat backtracking (once again discovered via Automaton), in an interview with Japanese site Game*Spark. Genki told the site that their model was not, in fact, based on a real Switch 2, but rather “leaked information that’s circulating in the industry.”

It was originally reported at the beginning of the week that Genki had based their model on a real version of Nintendo’s next console, as repeated by IGN here. It’s worth noting that all of these various reports have happened in different languages, and who knows what messages have been muddled along the way.

So, if anything, Nintendo’s statement leaves us knowing less about the Switch 2 than before. It remains interesting that the company spoke up at all, however, given how it’s been so incredibly tight-lipped until now, only ever having alluded to the next console as “the successor to the Nintendo Switch.” “Not official” is of course not a full denial of the model’s potential accuracy, but clearly Nintendo is sufficiently narked by all the scurrilous rumors swirling ahead of its planned announcement to have wanted to at least somewhat shoot this all down.

Nintendo maintains it will officially announce the Switch 2 by the end of March, however, or at this rate the thing will be on sale before they’ve acknowledged it by name.
