The final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, titled Patch 8, has finally arrived, and it delivers a plethora of content for fans to dive into. One of the most anticipated additions with Patch 8 is cross-play, which has been available for a select group of players since early 2025. However, now it’s available for all players across every platform, meaning you can finally jump in and play Baldur’s Gate 3 with any player, regardless of their system.
Below, you can see exactly how cross-play works in Baldur’s Gate 3 and how you can use it to join up with your friends on different platforms.
How cross-play works in Baldur’s Gate 3
Cross-play is a simple feature to use in Baldur’s Gate 3, but it does require a little bit of setup to get it working correctly.
First and foremost, you will need to have and actively be signed into a Larian account to take advantage of cross-play. Your Larian account is how you can add and invite/join players who are playing on different platforms. Naturally, any cross-platform player you’re trying to add will also need to have a Larian account.

Using your Larian account’s username, you can then tell a friend your username so they can add you, or vice versa. The only way you’re able to add cross-platform players is by creating a cross-play lobby in Baldur’s Gate 3. From here, you can add and invite friends, or they can invite you to their lobby.
You can see the steps you need to take for this to work below:
- From the main menu in Baldur’s Gate 3, select the “Multiplayer” tab from the drop-down menu
- Choose the “Cross-play” tab at the top of the screen
- This brings you to the cross-play menu, where you can opt to join an existing friend’s lobby
- However, if you need to add a friend, you need to select the “Create” option at the bottom of the screen
- From here, you can click on one of the three “plus” signs next to your name. This allows you to either “Add Friends” or “Invite Friends.”
- To add a friend, select that option and type in their exact Larian username. Your friend can then accept the friend request, and once they do, you can invite them to your lobby
- Your friend can also create their own lobby and invite you to it or you can join it by going to the main cross-play menu
- If you decide to create your own lobby, you can adjust the game settings on the right side of the screen

Cross-play only requires you and any friend you want to play with to have an active Larian account. From there, it’s as simple as adding your friends and inviting them to a created lobby in the same way regular multiplayer works in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Do mods work with cross-play in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The next logical question you may have about cross-play, especially if you’re on PC, is regarding mods.
Fortunately, Larian has specified that mods do work in cross-play. The only exception is that all players in the lobby need to have the same mod downloaded for it to work for every player in the lobby. This can get slightly sticky if you’re on PC and you play with console players, as they don’t have access to as many mods as you do.
Console players can’t make use of third-party mods and the mod limit on consoles is 100. Essnetially, if you use only first-party mods, ensure every player has the same mods installed, and you don’t download too many, your whole party can use mods.
