Monster Hunter Wilds‘ Mizutsune battle is one of the game’s toughest, thanks to the monster’s fast, unpredictable movements and extensive control over the battlefield. Mizutsune moves quickly and uses a mix of ranged and up-close attacks to keep you on the defensive, though with the right armor and weapons, you can give yourself a much better chance of survival.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Mizutsune location
As of Wilds’ Title Update 1, Mizutsune only live in the Scarlet Forest region, and that’s true for the Tempered version as well. However, you won’t be able to hunt Mizutsune until you meet a few requirements. The associated quest is Spirit in the Moonlight, and it unlocks once you reach Hunter Rank 16 after completing the main campaign.
The optional, repeatable Mizutsune quest, Bubbling Crimson Flowers, unlocks once you complete Spirit in the Moonlight and reach Hunter Rank 21 or higher. Tempered Mizutsune may start appearing in Scarlet Forest once you hit Hunter Rank 41.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Mizutsune attacks and counters
Mizutsune has two states: normal and enraged. Their attacks remain mostly the same in both states, but the enraged versions deal more damage and are typically harder to avoid. If you’re struggling, don’t forget to summon an AI companion or play with friends to make the hunt a bit easier.
- Bubbles: Mizutsune’s most common attack is blowing bubbles. These inflict the bubbleblight status, reduce health, and may knock you down, and after a while, Mizutsune will spit red bubbles that can inflict burns and reduce your health. Enraged Mizutsune does this more frequently. You can pop the bubbles with a weapon or dodge between them to avoid getting hit
- Water beam: Mizutsune sprays a jet of water in front of it and to the side. The beam has a comparatively short range, so you can either retreat further away or stay right next to Mizutsune. Enraged Mizutsune will aim the beam directly in front of it, boil the water, and create a small explosion
- Tail attacks: These are Mizutsune’s deadliest attacks. If you’re near the monster, Mizutsune will spin and lash their tail several times, knocking you down and dealing heavy damage. Dodge toward Mizutsune or quickly dodge multiple times to the side to avoid getting hit. The more dangerous version sees Mizutsune rise into the air for extra momentum, then slam their tail down first, followed by their entire body. Dodge forward or to the side to avoid this one, as this attack can one-shot you. If Mizutsune misses with this attack, they’ll remain stunned for a few seconds.
- Body slam: Mizutsune rears on hind legs and crashes down in front with the full length of their body
- Bite: If you’re near Mizutsune’s head, they’ll occasionally snap at you. The attack deals little damage, but it can stagger you. Stay a little further to the side of Mizutsune’s head to avoid getting hit.

That’s it. The weak point isn’t even Mizutsune’s head. You have to aim at the snout or open mouth for it to count as a weak point strike.

Mizutsune is also vulnerable to shock and pitfall traps, along with flash pods and any flashbug clusters you find in the wild. Barrel bombs aren’t really a weakness, but they are helpful ways to quickly deal 200-400 damage in a single explosion. Just make sure not to set them too far from Mizutsune’s position, as their bubble attacks can detonate the barrels from a distance.
Best weapons and armor for Mizutsune in Monster Hunter Wilds
While you can tackle Mizutsune as soon as you hit Hunter Rank 16, you really shouldn’t try until you’ve acquired some sturdy high-rank armor. Mizutsune’s attacks are powerful, and their frenzied tail smash can almost one-shot you if it connects.
Your best bet for weapons and armor comes from Gore Magala, a hunt you unlock in the chapter five quest A World Turned Upside Down. Gore Magala armor offers high water resistance, and any weapon with a Gore Magala tree has dragon as its elemental alignment, as much as 400 if you’re using a great sword.
Other strong weapon choices include Jin Dahaad weapons, and for armor, you can run with Lala Barina or Uth Duna armor and get the same water resistance stats you’d end up with from Gore Magala armor. Uth Duna is the better option of the two, though, as it has higher damage protection overall.
Whatever you choose, it’s a good idea to equip at least one ranged or high mobility weapon. Enraged Mizutsune moves very quickly and leaves you few chances to pull off attacks with slower or charged weapons like the hammer.
Even with the best armor, you’ll want to cook and eat a meal to boost your defense before setting out.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Mizutsune drops
Here’s what you’ll get from a Mizutsune hunt and their rarity using Monster Hunter’s star system where five stars is common and one star is rare. Using a Lucky Voucher will increase the number of rewards you get at the end of a quest, so if you’re after a full Mizutsune set and want to reduce the grind, that’s the way to go.

- Mizutsune Purplefur+: 3 stars, reward for breaking or severing tail
