A Minecraft Movie arrives in theaters this weekend, but the first reactions to the video game movie have arrived online. Directed by Jared Hess, the film focuses on four strangers who are transported to the strange but whimsical Overworld and have to find their way home.
The embargos have lifted on social media reactions, with fans mostly saying it’s a mixed bag. Some say it’s fun but with an unclear audience, while others think it’s destined to be a cult classic–similar to Hess’ Napoleon Dynamite 20 years ago.
While more in-depth reviews are coming later this week, let’s take a look at some of the initial and brief thoughts on A Minecraft Movie. YouTuber Cris Parker had fun with the movie, but the characters felt underdeveloped.
#MinecraftMovie is an AWFUL.. lot of fun!Director Jared Hess’s signature awkward/random humor had me audibly cackling several times. The VFX are impressive even if the humans stick out. Its biggest faults are in its story & underdeveloped leads. Still though, pretty entertaining pic.twitter.com/EfZNSGNjub

However, Dexerto and TotalFilm writer Jasmine Valentine was exponentially harsher for the Jack Black and Jason Momoa vehicle.
Social embargo is now up – A MINECRAFT MOVIE is easily the worst movie I have seen in years. Not one iota of it is entertaining aside from Jennifer Coolidge, whose back must be breaking from having to hold up this mess. Appalling storyline and script, if you can call them that.

ComicBook’s Chris Killian appreciated the movie, even though he was unfamiliar with the overall world and gameplay.
I’m not a Minecraft player, but I am a Jared Hess guy—and #MinecraftMovie is like a weird, quirky, what-the-hell fever dream. Jack Black is as unhinged as you’d expect, but Jason Momoa is hilarious as a washed-up gamer who takes himself too seriously. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/ADFvHq1n4D

ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan had positive praise for the movie, finding it comparable to Napoleon Dynamite.
Welp! I really liked the weird little gem that is A Minecraft Movie. Assumed I was outside the target demo, but with the Jared Hess of it all, it delivered something sharp, offbeat, and genuinely fun. A video game movie with Napoleon Dynamite DNA. pic.twitter.com/GLf1BvLqbn

A Minecraft Movie could emerge as a strong contender on the 2025 box office charts, no matter the word of mouth. The movie’s ticket pre-sales have made it the highest-earning PG movie of the year, while the feature is projected to earn at least $60 million across its first weekend.
A Minecraft Movie isn’t the only video game movie coming in April 2025, as Sony’s Until Dawn film arrives on April 25. April also sees the premiere of HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2.
