Bernthal will co-write a Punisher special — in the same vein as the one-installment MCU specials Werewolf by Night and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special — with writer/director Reinaldo Marcus Green, director of the HBO true-crime drama We Own This City, in which Bernthal starred as corrupt Baltimore police officer Wayne Jenkins.
“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story,” head of Marvel Television Brad Winderbaum told EW, “but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story.” Winderbaum said that the idea for the special came while in production on Daredevil: Born Again, the long-awaited revival of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s grittier, street-level silo of characters, whose series were originally produced through a partnership with Netflix.
Given that creator pedigree, and the production that inspired it, fans can probably expect a down-to-earth Punisher story in the same vein as Frank Castle’s appearances in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil and the two seasons of his own The Punisher series — and not, say, Frank Castle’s most recent Marvel Comics adventure, in which he became the leader of the Hand cult, who endowed him with the supernatural powers of their god of murder and resurrected his wife, Maria, who eventually shot Frank and divorced him, in that order.
Winderbaum offered no particular timeline on when any Punisher special would go into production or hit Disney Plus, but Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on the streaming service on March 4.
