Rumors Suggest The Legend Of Zelda Movie Might Span Three Films

Nintendo recently announced the scheduled release date for the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, but it might not be the only one in production. Rumors suggest that the film is actually the first of a planned trilogy.

VGC is reporting that industry insider Daniel Richtman claimed that The Legend of Zelda would be the first of a potential trilogy. Richtman also mentioned in the same paid subscription Patreon post that the potential trilogy would have a six-year plan, in which all significant acting roles would be signed on for the entire run.

The first film is scheduled to shoot in New Zealand, according to Production List, a tracking service run by the Film and Television Industry Alliance. Right now, the Legend of Zelda movie is set to film from November 2025 to April 2026. With a March 2027 release, pre-production could already be underway.

The site also offers a synopsis of the movie. Zelda will follow Link, “a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness”.

“The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce–an ancient relic said to grant limitless power,” the synopsis continues. “To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

The Legend of Zelda is the third Nintendo franchise to receive the film treatment in recent years, after Detective Pikachu and The Super Mario Bros Movie became huge hits. The latter became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023.

The Zelda film will be produced by creator Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director of Nintendo, and Avi Arad, the former chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment, and directed by Wes Ball (The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes).
