We’ve known about Shrek 5 being a thing officially since last year (and unofficially for longer than that). But we finally get a first glimpse of the new Shrek, and whoa, my mind’s a little broken at the implications.
The teaser is just over 30 seconds long, but it involves Shrek looking at a bunch of Shrek memes via the Magic Mirror. We got dancing Shrek in tight leather TikTok filter, buff Shrek, and glam Shrek. The internet exists in this world! The comment icon is a quill! And Pinocchio (??) is making these memes! Shrek is rightfully shocked at his memified form — and so is his daughter Felicia (Zendaya is Felicia).
That’s right! In case you forgot, Shrek is now a father of three. Last we left the Shrek family, the triplets were wiggly toddlers. But looks like they’re all grown up and old enough to discover that their father is a source of memes on the fantasy!internet. Will they stay surface level and only find the weird Shrek TikTok filters? Or dive deeper into the more batshit legacy Shrek has online?
This could just be a funky teaser that actually doesn’t take place in the world of the Shrek movies. However, considering the first Shrek movie was specifically engineered to take jabs at Disney. and the second one was a snarky look at Hollywood, it would honestly be in true Shrek tradition to satirize internet culture and what’s become of Shrek. Actually, being super duper in the zeitgeist is exactly what made the first two Shrek movies so funny. Though these days, everyone’s doing the wink-wink nudge-nudge self-aware thing, so we’ll have to see just how it lands.
Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy return as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, with Zendaya joining as Shrek’s daughter Felicia. Word’s out on who will play Shrek’s other kids, Fergus and Farkle.
Shrek 5 will hit theaters Christmas 2026.
