FakeFish, the devs behind the cosmic/ survival horror co-op game Barotrauma, have just revealed their next game at the Triple-i showcase, Frostrail. It’s another cosmic horror co-op game, albeit with an incredibly different vibe. Where Barotrauma has you trundling through a submarine, Frostrail opens things up a bit, putting you in an icy, apocalyptic looking setting where you have your own train to get you from place to place.
It’s also a first-person shooter, pitting you against lightly eldritchy humanoids that run at you probably faster than you’d like. Moment to moment you’ll be scavenging for materials to keep yourself alive and to upgrade your train, with a press release explaining that there’s also “forgotten dungeons and crumblings ruins” to explore too. Like my games of its ilk you can make new tools and weapons too, and up to four people can play in online co-op together.
For the most part the eldritch horrors are relegated to regular sized shadowy guys, though the trailer does round things off with your classic giant, impossible to comprehend kind of creature. Just in case you were worried they weren’t really taking the cosmic in cosmic horror very seriously.
I’m not a big online survival game kind of person, however, I do also like trains, and it’s not too often you get your own one in a video game, so I might be inclined to check this one out.
No exact release date just yet, but there’s plans for an early access release on Steam sometime in 2026. You can wishlist it here if it looks like your jam.
