The Gacha game genre has no doubt snowballed into a gaming powerhouse in the last decade, and though the genre has its headliners, there’s no doubt that there are gems buried in there. The bustling, character-packed strategy title, Girls’ Frontline 2, is among them, now gearing up to carry its player base into an exciting new update that’s stuffed with more new playable fighters than you’ll know what to do with.

The [Aphelion] update is loaded with new characters, weapons, rewards, and outfits. There’s an awful lot more to see, do, and shoot to ribbons–so what exactly is new in Girls’ Frontline 2?

Heaps of new characters

If you’ve played Girls’ Frontline 2, you’ll know that its twisting, dense narrative isn’t easily explained, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for even more characters to join your playable Commander in the fight. The [Aphelion] update introduces new Elite Dolls, featuring the elegant but cold leader of H.I.D.E 404, Klukai, and Support character Mechty, whose constant sleepiness doesn’t prevent her from being a reliable ally in critical situations.

The characters come with a good number of Outfits, too, with Klukai offering her Speed Star outfit as a free reward, and the Astral Luminous getup making an appearance during the update’s launch period. Plus, the game’s developers have revealed that Outfit customization isn’t too far away, either. If you’ve been looking for the chance to deploy some new Dolls into battle, your opportunity has arrived.

New story

The story of [Aphelion] will kick off directly after the events of the main game and Centaureissi’s story. It’s described by the game’s developers in the recent [Aphelion] Special Preview Program as a mini-climax to the core title’s narrative. The new story is fully voiced and will introduce you to some new members of H.I.D.E 404 as they take on more complex problems, featuring the arrival of its newest members, Belka and Andoris. Not much is known about the exact twists and turns we can expect, but the update promises a deeply involving narrative that carries the story of Girls’ Frontline 2 into an exciting new post-launch era.

New combat mechanics

The strategic combat of Girls’ Frontline 2 is what sets it apart the best from its Gacha counterparts, and it’s about to get even more customizable with the appearance of some flashy new firepower. It’s Klukai especially who brings big combat changes to the game, with corrosive damage and debuffs that stack, creating chain infections that will cause enemies to eventually explode with major area-of-effect damage.

Along with this comes Klukai’s elite weapon Skylla, which improves AOE damage and, if it lands critical hits, will ignore a part of a foe’s defense. Mechty has an imprint weapon of her own, too, with the [Daydream] AR coming to the game in [Aphelion] Part 2. The pair will also come with some bobblehead attachment skins at Affinity Level 8, for those of you looking to really flex on the battlefield.

New unlockables

Of course, a Gacha game like Girls’ Frontline 2 would be incomplete without a plethora of items to collect and add to your loadout. Thankfully, the [Aphelion] update is coming with plenty more for players to earn. Raising the Affinity of these new Dolls will not only offer these bobblehead attachment weapon skins, but new unique portrait frames, exclusive titles, Access Permissions, Common Keys, and plenty more to come. More weapon skins are on the way too, with [Aurora Chaser] and [Rippling Serenade] set to appear across the update’s two parts.

New gameplay styles

The [Aphelion] update is defined by the arrival of the new permanent game mode Boundary Push, which will see you push your Dolls into enemy territory to loot and complete bounty missions. It comes with three difficulty modes, each offering its own tier of rewards, helping to bring an entirely new risk-reward element to the game. The choice is yours as to whether you should go in all guns blazing or pick off foes from further away to gain the upper hand, but either way, a tough battle awaits if you’re opting for the game’s highest difficulty setting. You’ll be able to leave at any point with the loot you’ve already earned, though, so if it’s time to back out before the heat gets too high, you won’t leave empty-handed.

This update brings the return of Assault Simulation, too, as it adds the new Defense Mode that will see you blast through enemies as you hold a defensive line in an over-the-shoulder view.

That’s everything you need to know about what’s new in Girls’ Frontline 2. There’s a lot to get stuck into with the arrival of the [Aphelion] update on March 20th, but there’s even more around the corner with the debut of its second part on April 10th, so be ready for its arrival!
